Tetra Pak's New Paper-Based Ice Cream Wrapper: Another Opportunity for Specialty Paper Manufacturers
Paper-based packaging continues to move into applications traditionally dominated by other materials.
The latest example comes from Tetra Pak.
On 6 October 2026, the company announced the commercial development of its new Tetra Pak Ice Cream Wrap, a packaging material manufactured using up to 85% paper.
The material is currently undergoing validation with European ice cream producers, including Sweden's Triumf Glass, ahead of a phased commercial rollout planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Tetra Pak
Although it may appear to be a relatively small packaging innovation, the development highlights an important opportunity for specialty paper and converting manufacturers.
1. Replacing Packaging Materials Isn't Straightforward
Ice cream packaging presents significant technical challenges.
Materials need to protect products throughout frozen storage and distribution.
They must perform reliably on high-speed wrapping equipment.
Sealing performance and product protection are critical.
And manufacturers must balance those requirements against material consumption and cost.
Tetra Pak's solution uses a multilayer structure incorporating paper-based barrier technology.
At 53 grams per square metre, the material is relatively lightweight. Tetra Pak says its structure is up to 50% thinner than selected paper-based alternatives assessed during the company's own testing.
Importantly, the remaining material composition includes polymers, inks and lacquers, so the product is not entirely paper or plastic-free. Recyclability also depends on the finished structure and available collection and recycling systems. Packaging Europe
That distinction matters.
Successful paper-based packaging innovation isn't simply about maximising fibre content.
It is about achieving the required performance while using materials efficiently.
2. Why Specialty Paper Producers Should Pay Attention
Innovations like this create opportunities beyond traditional printing and packaging grades.
Specialty paper manufacturers increasingly work with customers developing products that require specific barrier, strength, surface and converting characteristics.
Those requirements may involve moisture resistance, controlled porosity, printability, food-contact suitability or compatibility with existing packaging machinery.
Each application creates technical challenges.
And those challenges create opportunities for manufacturers capable of developing highly engineered fibre-based products.
The wider implication is significant.
Rather than competing primarily on tonnes produced, specialty paper businesses can increasingly differentiate themselves through product performance and technical expertise.
3. Recruitment Insight: Product Development Skills Are Becoming More Valuable
As fibre-based packaging expands, demand for specialist technical knowledge could increase.
The strongest opportunities may emerge for professionals with experience in paper chemistry, barrier coatings, product development, converting, quality assurance and packaging engineering.
Importantly, these roles often require expertise across traditional industry boundaries.
A paper technologist may need to understand food packaging.
A converting engineer may need experience in barrier materials.
A Product Development Manager may need to combine fibre science with customer manufacturing requirements.
This creates new career pathways for people already working in paper manufacturing.
It also creates opportunities to attract technical professionals from the wider packaging and materials sectors.
To round up
Tetra Pak's new ice cream wrapper is another example of how paper-based materials are moving into increasingly demanding applications.
Not every development requires a new paper machine or major mill investment.
Sometimes innovation comes from finding a new application for fibre.
And as those applications expand, the industry will need people with the technical skills to develop, manufacture and convert increasingly sophisticated paper products.
